American countertenor Christopher Lowrey, described as "one of the operatic countertenors of our day, excelling dramatically and vocally, with clear, ringing and flexible tone" (Bachtrack), has emerged as one of the most sought-after countertenors on both sides of the Atlantic. He is equally at home on the opera stage and the concert platform, with a career encompassing over forty roles.
He created the part of Guildenstern in the world premiere of Brett Dean's Hamlet at Glyndebourne, reprising it at the Metropolitan Opera. Recent and upcoming engagements include David in Saul with the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston and in Barrie Kosky's production at Oper Köln; the title roles in Handel's Rinaldo at the Halle Handel Festival and Giulio Cesare in Lithuania; Il trionfo del Tempo with La Nuova Musica at Wigmore Hall; and a tour of Bach's St Matthew Passion with the Netherlands Bach Society under Masaaki Suzuki, including his Concertgebouw debut.
Further appearances include the Royal Opera House, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro Real, and Bachfest Leipzig, with collaborators including William Christie, Vladimir Jurowski, Raphaël Pichon, Harry Bicket, Christophe Rousset, Jonathan Cohen, Laurence Cummings, and Leonardo García Alarcón. Recent recordings include Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with Sandrine Piau and Les Talens Lyriques under Christophe Rousset (Alpha); Vivaldi's Farnace with Pinchgut Opera, praised by Limelight for its "clear diction and incisive technique with theatrical prowess"; Handel's Poro with Il Groviglio (Château de Versailles Spectacles); Solomon and Theodora with Leonardo García Alarcón (Ricercar); and a series of Handel recordings on Accent including Rodelinda, Arminio, Susanna, and Faramondo.
Christopher is also Founder and Artistic Director of Ensemble Altera, one of the most exciting young chamber choirs in the US, now in its fifth season. Highlights include the world-premiere of Declarations on the occasion of the 250th, and a forthcoming Pentatone release of a chamber-scale Messiah.
