An extraordinary but largely unknown musical culture flourished in Italian nunneries. In Behind Convent Walls, TENET joins forces with friends from the Green Mountain Project to explore a secret tradition by uncovering the wide variety of music for female voices published by Italian women who lived in and taught music in convents. Far from being a repertoire filled exclusively by chant and Latin polyphony, the drama of this music makes it clear that these women were among the most virtuosic musicians of their time. Their consummate compositional style and impassioned vocal writing is dazzling, making it difficult to believe that this music was taking place behind closed doors.
