And we're off... (Departing NYC)

June 3, 2024
TENET Germany Travelogue, Day 1
Jacob Perry, tenor

The morning on the first day of a tour as a musician is a beautiful mess: check lists, last-minute errands, saying goodbye to the houseplants, checking for the third time that my passport does in fact exist and is safely in my bag…and what time do I have to be at JFK?

Lucky for me, my flight to Frankfurt was scheduled for 6:50pm. So, I was able to enjoy a luxurious number of snoozes on my alarm, followed by a slice of sourdough toast baked by my partner using a starter brought to us all the way from Philly courtesy of TENET soprano, Clara Rottsolk.

Saying goodbye to my little slice of heaven in Brooklyn is always hard, particularly on a gorgeous sunny day like yesterday, but the promise of adventure and the opportunity to make music with TENET on the road certainly helps. After a last-minute scramble to find my garment bag and a final glance over my lists, I made my way to the airport. I arrived 3 hours early for the flight and before I could sit down to grab a bite of food at the lounge, I got a notification that my bag had boarded the plane. It was as if the plane were as excited to get going as I!

Having had such an amazing time touring the UK with TENET in 2022, I have been looking forward to this trip for many months. I have been particularly excited to dig into this repertoire with this group of musicians. The music of Claudio Monteverdi has become a specialty of mine so l'm thrilled to be performing his music with an ensemble that has such a long and rich history of interpreting it. Adding to the joy, this group includes some very close colleaques and some with whom I am just beginning to develop the bonds of friendship. I know the memories we create on this trip will live with us fondly for years to come.

A few chapters of a novel, a re-watch of Star Wars Episode IV, and a darn good plane meal (see above!) later..Zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Next stop…Frankfurt…
