DONGMYUNG AHN

 

Early string specialist Dongmyung Ahn is a performer, educator, and scholar whose interests span from the twelfth to eighteenth centuries. She is co-founder of Guido’s Ear and has performed with the Sebastians, TENET Vocal Artists, Green Mountain Vespers, Raritan Players, Pegasus, and Marginalia. She has played rebec in the critically acclaimed production of The Play of Daniel at the Cloisters. A dedicated educator, Dongmyung is the director of the Queens College Baroque Ensemble and has taught music history at Vassar College and Queens College. She received her PhD in musicology at the Graduate Center, CUNY and has published an article on medieval liturgy in the Rodopi series Faux Titre.

JULIE ANDRIJESKI

Julie Andrijeski enjoys both teaching and performing early music and dance.  As a full-time Lecturer at Case Western Reserve University, Ms. Andrijeski leads classes in historical performance practices, teaches lessons in baroque violin, and directs the baroque orchestra, chamber, and dance ensembles.  Her combined skills in music and dance often culminate in workshops and special teaching engagements at colleges and universities such as the Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, Juilliard, the University of Southern California, and the University of Colorado – Boulder.  During the summers, Ms. Andrijeski teaches both violin and dance at several festivals including those in Oberlin (BPI), Madison (MEMF), and Vancouver, BC (BIP).  

In addition to her teaching positions, Ms. Andrijeski maintains an active performance schedule.  She has been invited to play with many diverse early music groups across the nation and regularly appears with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra (Artistic Director), New York State Baroque (Concertmaster), Quicksilver (Co-Director with Robert Mealy), Apollo’s Fire, Les Délices, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, and The King’s Noyse.

DANIEL ELYAR

DANIEL ELYAR

Daniel Elyar is an active performer and recording artist and has specialized in baroque performance practice in Europe and North America for over twenty years. Mr. Elyar has performed and recorded with ensembles in North America and Europe such as Tafelmusik, the Utrecht Baroque Consort, Concerto d’Amsterdam, Teatro Lirico, Concerto Palatino, Les Arts Florissants, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, the New York Collegium, The King’s Noyse, The Newbury Consort, Ensemble REBEL (NYC), NY State Baroque, Tempesta di Mare, Philomel, Bach Festival of Philadelphia, Clarion Players and Choir (NYC) and the Trinity Baroque Orchestra on Wall street. Mr. Elyar is happily a founder member of the Franklin Quartet, the Delaware Valley’s only Period Instrument string quartet. Mr. Elyar has taught for over fifteen years at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and is full-time faculty staff there. From 2014 to 2016 Mr. Elyar directed the Renaissance Collegium at Temple University.

GRANT HERREID

GRANT HERREID

Grant Herreid performs frequently on early reeds, brass, strings and voice with many US early music ensembles. A specialist in early opera, he has played theorbo, lute and baroque guitar with the Chicago Opera Theater, Aspen Music Festival, Portland Opera, and New York City Opera. A noted teacher and educator, he is the recipient of Early Music America’s Laurette Goldberg award for excellence in early music outreach and education. He directs the Yale Collegium Musicum, and the Yale Baroque Opera Project (YBOP). Grant also directs the New York Continuo Collective, and recently played hurdy gurdy, lute, theorbo, cittern, and percussion in the Broadway productions of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Richard III, starring Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry. He has created and directed several theatrical early music shows, and he devotes much of his time to exploring the esoteric unwritten traditions of early music with the ensemble Ex Umbris.

Shirley Hunt (viola da gamba) brings fierce imagination and integrity to the music of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. In high demand as viola da gamba soloist and continuo cellist, Ms. Hunt performs extensively with the nation's leading period instrument ensembles including Boston Baroque, Handel and Haydn Society, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, The Sebastians, TENET, Sonnambula, and RUCKUS. As a soloist, she has performed as a at DePaul University, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), the Boston Public Library, WGBH Pindrop Sessions, and Ashmont Hill Chamber Music in Dorchester. As a chamber musician, she has performed at the Morgan Library & Museum, the Library of Congress, the Strathmore Mansion, Caramoor, La Jolla Music Society, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

GREG INGLES

GREG INGLES

 

Greg Ingles attended the Interlochen Arts Academy and went on to graduate from the Oberlin Conservatory. Two days after graduation Greg won the position of Solo Trombone in the Hofer Symphoniker in Hof, Germany. He returned to the United States and completed both a Master’s and Doctoral degree in trombone performance at SUNY Stony Brook, specializing in historic performance. Greg is a member of Piffaro, Quicksilver and Ciaramella and has played with such ensembles as the American Bach Soloists, Chatham Baroque, Concerto Palatino, The Handel and Haydn Society and Tafelmusik.  He is Music Director of the Dark Horse Consort, an ensemble devoted to rarely performed brass music of the 17th century. He recently played with the Globe Theater in their Broadway debut. He is currently the Lecturer in Sackbut at Boston University and teaches at the Madison Early Music Festival each summer.

SHIRA KAMMEN

Multi-instrumentalist Shira Kammen has spent much of her life exploring the world of early music. A member for many years of the early music Ensembles Alcatraz and Project Ars Nova, and Medieval Strings, she has also worked with Sequentia, Hesperion XX, the Boston Camerata, the Balkan group Kitka, the King’s Noyse, the Newberry and Folger Consorts, Parthenia, Anonymous IV, Rose of the Compass, the Oregon, California and San Francisco Shakespeare Festivals, singer Anne Azema, storyteller Patrick Ball, clown Jeff Raz, among many other fine performers, and is the founder of Class V Music, an ensemble dedicated to providing music on river rafting trips. She has performed and taught in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Morocco, Latvia, Russia, Abu Dhabi and Japan.

LIZA MALAMUT

LIZA MALAMUT

Liza Malamut, trombone, is an active performer throughout the United States and abroad. She has appeared with groups such as Dark Horse Consort, Boston Camerata, Piffaro, and others. Liza has a DMA in Historical Performance from Boston University. She received an American Fellowship from the American Association of University Women for her work on the integration of historical pedagogy with mainstream teaching. Liza served as Visiting Lecturer in Sackbut at Indiana University in Spring 2015 and 2018, and she most recently co-founded Incantare, an ensemble of violins and sackbuts performing works from the 16th and 17th centuries.

DEBRA NAGY

DEBRA NAGY

Praised for her “dazzling technique and soulful expressiveness,” (Rocky Mountain News), and a musical approach that’s “distinctly sensual…pliant, warm, and sweet,” (New York Times), Debra Nagy is one of North America’s leading performers on the baroque oboe. Debra plays principal oboe with the Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society and Apollo’s Fire in Cleveland (among many others), and has been called a “musical polymath” (San Francisco Classical Voice) for her accomplished performances as a singer and historical wind player. She is the founder of acclaimed chamber ensemble Les Délices and indulges her love of late-medieval music as a regular guest with Boston’s Blue Heron and Chicago’s Newberry Consort. Inspired by a creative process that brings together research, composition in historical styles, and artistic collaboration, highlights of Debra’s recent projects include a multimedia production of Machaut's Remede de Fortune and a Baroque-Jazz fusion program called Songs without Words.

ALEXANDRA OPSAHL

Alex Opsahl studied recorder with Peter Holtslag and Daniel Bruggen at the Royal Academy of Music, and cornetto with Bruce Dickey at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.  Alex has performed with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra under Ton Koopman, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Boston Early Music Festival, the Green Mountain Project, the Oslo Opera and Glyndebourne Opera. She recorded Vivaldi’s Concerto in C Minor, RV 441, with the Norwegian period orchestra Barokkanerne, and recently recorded the JD Berlin Cornetto Concerto with the Norwegian Baroque Orchestra.

Mack Ramsey has been a longtime specialist in performance on a number of early instruments, including sackbut, recorder, Renaissance flute, lute and classical era trombones. He is a member of the early brass ensemble, Dark Horse Consort and is in regular demand  performing and recording with many baroque orchestras. Mack lives in Natick, Massachusetts.

ERIK SCHMALZ

ERIK SCHMALZ

Erik Schmalz, an early brass specialist, can be heard on numerous recordings, including a 2013 Grammy-nominated album by The Choir of Trinity Wall Street and The Trinity Baroque Orchestra. Erik works internationally with prestigious ensembles, including Piffaro, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik, Handel and Haydn Society, Apollo’s Fire, Green Mountain Project, Washington National Cathedral Baroque Orchestra, and Dark Horse Consort, performing on renaissance through romantic period trombones, renaissance slide trumpet, and recorder.  In addition, he was cast as one of the seven instrumentalists in the Globe Theater's productions of Richard III and Twelfth Night, the first time Broadway has used period instruments exclusively. Erik received degrees in trombone performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He resides in Collinsville, Connecticut.

EZRA SELTZER

Lauded for his “beauty of tone and keenness of musicianship” (Opera Britannia), cellist Ezra Seltzer has performed as guest principal cellist of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Musica Angelica, Orchester Wiener Akademie, and the Trinity Wall Street Baroque Orchestra. He has also appeared as a soloist and principal cellist at the Boulder Bach Festival, and is the associate principal cellist at the Carmel Bach Festival. In New York, he regularly performs chamber music at Helicon Foundation Symposia, the 4x4 Baroque Music Festival, and at Music Before 1800, and is a co-founder and principal cellist of the Sebastians. This season he will also appear with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Chicago's Baroque Band, and New York Baroque Incorporated.

DANIEL SWENBERG

Daniel Swenberg specializes in historical plucked strings: Renaissance and Baroque lutes, theorbos, Baroque and 19th century guitars, and Baroque mandolino—and yes, it takes a lot of time to tune them. He performs regularly throughout North America with ensembles such as Artek, Rebel, the Metropolitan Opera, the Carmel Bach Festival, Mr. Jones & the Engines of Destruction, Ensemble Viscera, New York City Opera, Opera Atelier/Tafelmusik, Catacoustic Ensemble, the Four Nations Enmble, Apollo’s Fire, the Green Mountain Project, and with soprano Nell Snaidas. He has accompanied Renee Fleming and Kathleen Battle at Carnegie Hall. Daniel received awards from the Belgian American Educational Foundation (2000) for a study of 18th century chamber music for the lute, and a Fulbright Scholarship (1997) to study in Bremen, Germany, at the Hochschule für Künste (studying with Stephen Stubbs and Andrew Lawrence King). He studied previously with Pat O’Brien at Mannes College of Music, receiving a Masters Degree in Historical Performance (Lute).

KIRI TOLLAKSEN

Kiri Tollaksen (cornetto) enjoys a varied career as a performer and teacher. Praised for her "stunning technique, and extreme musicality," (Journal of the International Trumpet Guild), and called an “excellent cornetto player” (New York Times), Kiri has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe with such groups as Concerto Palatino, La Fenice, Toronto Consort, Tenet, Piffaro, Pacific MusicWorks, Tesserae, Apollo’s Fire, and is a member of the highly regarded early brass ensemble Dark Horse Consort. With degrees from Eastman, Yale and University of Michigan, Kiri has been on the faculty of Indiana University (Bloomington), Brass Antiqua (VA), and the Amherst and Madison Early Music Festivals. ANNE TROUT

Bassist Anne Trout performed, recorded and toured with most of the prominent early ensembles in North America for many years.  She is especially proud to be a long-time member of Aston Magna and to have been an active member of Handel & Haydn Society during the Hogwood years.  Often praised for her spirited and stylish continuo playing, she is sought not only for her experience but for her interest in new collaborations which this season include Blue Hill Bach, Vivaldi Project and Four Nations.  Anne serves on the faculties of Longy School of Music of Bard College and Boston College.  She has recently been named baroque consultant for L'Archet Concert Group and performed on its series this season with the American Classical Orchestra.

JESSICA TROY

Jessica Troy, viola, wears a variety of freelance hats. Since 1998 she has toured extensively with the Mark Morris Dance Group Music Ensemble, from San Juan to Sydney, and appeared with Yo-Yo Ma across the US and Japan. On baroque viola, ensembles she performs frequently with include: the Sebastians, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Opera Lafayette, Concert Royal, Helicon, and the 4 Nations Ensemble; she has guested with Anima Eterna Brugge, and appeared with Renée Fleming on the David Letterman Show. A member of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New York City Opera Orchestra, and the Westchester and Brooklyn Philharmonics, she performs frequently with many other area ensembles, including the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra and NOVUS NY. She has recorded quartet parts for Lou Reed and Ani DiFranco, performed on TV with Whitney Houston, and on film with David Byrne. A participant at many illustrious music festivals, including Tanglewood, Spoleto, and Marlboro, she can be heard on Marlboro’s 50th anniversary CD in György Kurtág’s Microludes for string quartet, which she prepared with the composer.
