Stile Antico, Stile Moderno
Dark Horse Consort
Monday | January 6, 2020 | 6pm

Chiesa di San Rocco, Venice

Composition in Italy at the turn of the 17th century was in the midst of a vast upheaval that would forever change the sound of music. The older style of equal voiced polyphonic writing (stile antico) was quickly being usurped by the newer and more virtuosic style that emphasized distinct melody lines accompanied by bass continuo (stile moderno). Stile Antico, Stile Moderno features madrigals, ricercars and canzoni of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli and Giaches de Wert as well as virtuosic early baroque sonatas and canzoni of Claudio Merulo, Giovanni Picchi and Giovanni Battista Riccio.

Cornetti: Kiri Tollaksen and Alexandra Opsahl
Sackbuts: Greg Ingles, Liza Malamut, Mack Ramsey, and Erik Schmalz

UNO + ONE
TENET Vocal Artists
Tuesday | January 7, 2020 | 6pm

Scuola di San Rocco, Venice

Fiery, passionate, inventive, intimate. These words aptly describe the music and poetry of the 17th-century. Rich, eloquent poetry is the foundation for the songs set by Claudio Monteverdi and his contemporaries, and is therefore the central focus of this courtly music program. In UNO + ONE, the dynamic duo of Jolle Greenleaf and Molly Quinn join forces to explore the wealth moving music composed for two equal voices. Together, the singers have toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Central America, and Scandanavia, sharing their infectious love of music of early baroque repertoire with today’s audiences.

Sopranos: Jolle Greenleaf and Molly Quinn
Tenors: Jason McStoots and Aaron Sheehan
Theorbos: Hank Heijink and Charles Weaver
Organ: Jeffrey Grossman
Violins: Dongmyung Ahn and Daniel Elyar

Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610
Green Mountain Project
Wednesday | January 8, 2020 | 2:30pm

Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice

Named for the English translation of “Monteverdi”, the Green Mountain Project offered their inaugural performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 on January 3, 2010 to great acclaim. The project’s tremendous success in NYC led to annual performances, two recordings, and newly created programs for the all star cast.

We aim to spread the joy of this great project by extending its reach to Venice in 2020 in celebration of a decade of performances. Our All Star cast of singers and instrumentalists have been part of this decade-long tradition which will come to a close in January 2020 with performances in New York City and Venice, Italy.
